Blue Diamond: World’s Most Expensive precious stone

Recognized as one of the unique gems in the world, a flawless blue diamond is now being honored as the most expensive gemstone in the world. The 6.04-carat diamond has been sold for $7.98 million at Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong. To my non-surprise, the flawless blue diamond fetched $1.32 million per carat. The sale has beaten the record made 20-years-back by the Hancock Red a red diamond that generated $926,000 per carat at Sotheby’s.

The blessed buyer is Moussaieff Jewelers based in London and he is glad to purchase this diamond from a private Asian collector, as it would be an addition to his rare collection of precious jewels. Blue diamonds are known for captivating the filthy rich gentry with glittering dark charisma. True, it is not the largest stone but its revered cut and ‘vibrant blue’ hue beats every other benchmark. Its revered cut and ‘vibrant blue’ hue is what justifies its bulky price that is almost 10 times the per-carat price of regular white diamonds.

The blue tinge is due to the presence of boron in the gem’s crystal formation. Unlike other colorful diamonds viz. pink and red that are mined in various sites across the globe, ‘blues’ are found very rare and that too in the Premier Mine located in South Africa.

De Beers Centenary Diamond

The De Beers Centenary is the fifth world’s most luxurious diamond. Its price is $100 million and its weigh is $273.85 carat. It has many colors and it is the world’s most expensive diamond. The Centenary Diamond was revealed in the Premier Mine on 17 July 1986 using their X-ray imaging scheme.

The De Beers Centenary Diamond is, at 273.85 carats the third-largest diamond to have been fashioned in the Premier Mine. The Centenary Diamond is rated in color as grade D color by the Gemological Institute of America, which is the uppermost grade of colorless diamond, and is internally and externally faultless.

Cutting such an immense and expensive diamond required expertise and a significant investment. The primary efforts were done by hand rather than with a laser or saw so as not to heat or vibrate the diamond. The shape was described as, efficiently, the Centenary Diamond is formed like a heart-shape, but it does not have a groove.

The Nature Of Diamond

Diamond, composed of carbon, is the hardest natural substance in the earth. Each carbon atom is enclosed by four neighboring carbon atoms in a tetrahedral coordination that is the result of a covalent bond and a face-centered arrangement in the cubic unit cell. Diamond is in the isometric crystal system, which is reflected in the usually found octahedral or cubic crystal form. The external crystal class is 4/mBar32/m, whereas the space group designation is F41dBar32/m. Twins are frequent on the {111} plane. It has perfect four directional cleavage, adamantine shine, and both a high refractive index, 2.42, and specific gravity, 3.52. Color is generally pale yellow to colorless, but can also be brown, blue, green, orange, red, and black.

Diamond might be up to 3 billion years old, which is much older than their surface host rock (Harlow, 1998, p. 60). Diamond crystallization originates some 200 kilometers, or 320 miles, under the surface and the disaggregated crystals are merely transported to the surface via kimberlite and lamproite pipes (Harlow, 1998, p. 54). These igneous host rock formations are generally cylindrical in shape and act as a conduit from the Earth's mantle to the contintental crust.

Diamonds are distinguished between various types, Ia, Ib, IIa, and IIb. Though this information is important to the diamond cutter, it is of no value to the student merely interested in diamond as a gemstone. Diamond's greater optical properties and hardness has earned this mineral the highest respect in both industry and jewelry. It has a long tradition of invincibility and therefore the Greek name, adamas.

Synthetic Diamonds are Selling Imaginings

Synthetic Diamond

If you are the one who is looking for less and is well-informed about manmade diamonds you should have examine the article of Joshua Davis made for wired magazine in 2003. The issue of his topic then was the technology of increasing synthetic diamonds and all about their properties. Even the dealers of Antwerp could hardly believe the diamonds exposed by Davis were not mined but of quite other origin.

Currently there are sufficient brands offering manmade diamond jewelry Gemesis, Carat and others. For instance, when asked about the option of synthetic diamonds for their jewelry, a chief executive of Carat brand said that they aim to offer affordable jewelry. Even though it is less costly that of natural diamonds, they strive for manufacturing their products only using the resources of high end quality. Less expensive doesn't mean of less quality, the concept that actually makes man made diamonds competitive on the jewelry market.

However, synthetic diamonds are not designated for grave diamond buyers. The latter in fact do not hesitate on purchasing a gem for $10,000 or a cheaper one for $2,000. Such customers usually know what they actually want, they are either the collectors, or celebrities or other well-to-do buyers, who opt for mined diamonds to correspond to their status. Other people living on a tight budget still have their dreams, fantasies or have to follow a few traditions like that of buying engagement ring with a diamond inside. For this reason man made diamonds were grown. They are created to make the imaginings come true at least for some people.

Though India and South Africa have been forever undisputed leaders for their largest diamond resources on the planet, however this is China that surpassed them together revealing the largest diamond deposit for the last ten years.

Though this discovery seems to increase the production of diamonds and thus to increase the variety of diamond jewelry, but according to prognosis it won't help to reduce the price for this stone in the country. Even if you choose to try your luck and dig the diamond by yourself, you won't succeed: the diamonds are the part of national source of the country that can't be exploiting by individuals. As it's seen, the diamonds are going to keep on their status of the mainly precious and inaccessible gems.
